NEW LIFE AT DOLPHIN DISCOVERY
Dolphin Discovery Center’s Second Anniversary last month was especially joyful as the installation also celebrated the four-month birthday of the newest member of the dolphin family, a male named Barlaam, born on September 26, 2012.
The healthy calf is the first to be born at the Puerto Los Cabos Dolphin Discovery Center and he becomes the eighth member of a pod that includes five females including his mother Ixchel and two males including his father, the alpha male of the pod Titan.
The calf’s name was chosen in a contest for local school children invited to submit name suggestions along with a background story. The winning submission, submitted by third grade student Nathalia Nocedal Patino, told the story of a lonely dolphin who wished upon a star for a companion and received baby Barlaam from the kindly star.
“We are very pleased to report that the young calf is healthy, exhibits a normal growth rate and is a very playful young dolphin,” says Dolphin Discovery resident veterinarian Dra. Cristina Miyauchi. The calf and his mother were kept in a “maternity ward” lined with special mesh to insure the young dolphin’s safety for the first four months while his growth and health were monitored closely by Dolphin Discovery staff.
Dolphin Discovery at Puerto Los Cabos is a recognized member of the Alliance of Marine Mammals, Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) and has also earned good standing from the International Marine Animals Trainers Association.
